The first shuttle, Enterprise, was designed to be part of the fleet even though it was never used and now sits as part of an exhibit next to the Enola Gay. One of the reasons it will be 2013-15 before we have launch capability for the new manned space vehicle will be the time it will take crews at the Cape to reconfigure launch pads 39A and 39B for the new vehicle since these pads were chopped in half for the shuttle after they had been used to launch the Apollo moon missions. As someone who grew up in the shadow of Kennedy Space Center, it saddens me when people yell about how much we spend on NASA (which in reality is only barely one half of 1% of the Federal budget and less than what is wasted by most Federal programs) without realizing that those jobs are all here on Earth.
