Let's see...For personal combat, I'll take the Ahn-woon and lirpa used by Vulcans during Koon-it-ka-li-fee (the challenge issued by the bride to be if she wants out of the arranged marriage (see the Original Series episode "Amok Time" for reference), a phaser rifle or better yet a phaser cannon for maximum damage if forced to defend a position, and in space I'll take a Romulan bird-of-prey (stealth attacks), Klingon bird of prey (diversion), Klingon D-7 battlecruiser (for light work), Defiant (bait), and a Constitution-class starship to actually get the job done because Galaxy-class starships are for posers. In no way would I ever want a Star Destroyer, Super Star Destroyer, or even TIE fighters anywhere near me. Hey, if they can't even protect two Death Stars from destruction by a rag tag fleet of ships, would you?

Also, as to Harvey Korman being on every variety show in the '70's, I think it was only the ones that aired on CBS since he was part of "The Carol Burnett Show" that aired on the network at the time. Also, this was a time that variety shows were starting to wane from their height in the '60's and this was roughly 6 years after "The Ed Sullivan Show" left the air waves. And yes, as a kid, I was forced to watch it because my parents loved the show. And to think, the following year we got the original "Battlestar Galactica" on ABC with Lorne Greene (Pa Cartwright from "Bonanza") as Adama which, as cheesy as it was, was better than this. Then season 2 struck and ruined it.

I find it more interesting to watch my sisters inflict this upon their kids and grand kids. Being that 11/17/78 was probably a Friday night when it aired, I didn't get to be tortured the first time around because I was at our High School football game (being in the band has its advantages at times). To age myself even further, I was a Sophomore in 1978, so watching it probably wasn't too high on the list anyway. Oh, and to the purple and the Prince reference, there was someone else at the time who loved purple. I had to hear about it because my youngest sister had a crush on him and read about it in either Tiger Beat or one of the other rags that catered to teen girls at the time. And at the same time, he and his sister had a variety show on ABC. His name is Donny Osmond. Yes, those Osmonds from Utah, the other family competition in the '70's to the Jacksons.

Here are a few blasts from the past on genetic engineering and mutation gone wrong, post-apocalyptic diversions so the people don't riot and Mother Nature out for revenge:

from the '50's:

The Amazing Colossal Man and its sequel War of the Colossal Beast. Our victim/protagonist is exposed to Plutonium in an atomic blast while running to get people out of ground zero. As an effect of being exposed and surviving the blast he grows to 70ft. tall then goes crazy. After terrorizing Las Vegas, he is supposedly killed at Hoover Dam. In the sequel, there are reports that something is raiding trucks in Mexico. We find out he survived the fight at the dam and is electrocuted in front of a busload of schoolkids.

The Blob. Steve McQueen leads a bunch of townspeople against an alien blob that crashes to Earth and starts munching on anything in its path.

Tarantula. Genetic scientist is doing research and his 22 day old mutated tarantula, about the size of a large house, escapes and creates havoc in the desert.

The '60's and '70's:

The Andromeda Strain. Biological Warfare Research gone bad.

Kingdom of the Spiders. Spiders take over a small town and start attacking the townspeople. And I can't believe this wasn't mentioned in the show since The Shat starred in this movie when the rug on his head was actually good.

Empire of the Ants. Giant ants enslaving humanity. With this much cheese, what's not to like???

Soylent Green. Charleton Heston plays a worker in one of the plants that makes this stuff and finds out its people. This was also the last picture for Edward G. Robinson who played his father.

Death Race 2000. In a post-apocalyptic world, a cross country race where points are scored depending on the age and number of people you ran over to divert your attention from life. With a couple of no-name actors leading the cat at the time (David Carradine ans Sly Stallone) this had the blood, the gore allowed at the time, and nudity. What more could you want??? And since this was a Roger Corman flick, you know the cheese is there.
Quite a few of these were probably on MST or would have been if they had gotten the rights.

Also, for Episode 124, your salute to "Weird" Al, there is another Geek connection.

In the song "CNR", where he sings about Charles Nelson Reilly, there is a connection between him and the Hoff. From 1968 to 1970, CNR was in a TV show called "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." Hope Lange played Mrs. Muir and Edward Mulhare played the Ghost. Fast forward to 1982. Edward Mulhare plays the role of Devon Miles, making sure that the Knight Industries Two Thousand (better known as KITT) is well supplied and recruits the Hoff to become Michael Knight for a little show called "Knight Rider."

That should be "The Day the Earth Stood Still" in the previous post.

Now to make everybody but the Flynnstress feel old, here are some genre and non-genre actors and icons we watched on TV and at the movies and their ages

Ron Howard (little Opie Taylor on "The Andy Griffith Show" is 57.

Billy Mumy (Will Robinson from "Lost in Space") is also 57.

Sally Field (TV's "Gidget" and "the Flying Nun" before she was drooled over by teenage boys in "Smokey and the Bandit") is 65.

Donna Douglas (Elly May Clampett on "The Beverly Hillbillies") is 78.

Robby the Robot ("Forbidden Planet") is 55.

The Robot (Model B-9) from "Lost in Space" is 47.

Our favorite first imports from Japan, as follows (age is from when first shown in Japan):

Gojira aka Godzilla is 57

Rodan is 54

Mothra and Ghidorah are 47

Astro Boy is 48

Speed Racer is 46

And for our cartoons "The Flintstones" are fast approaching 50, Bugs Bunny is 77, Yogi Bear is 46, and Scooby-Doo is 42.

Sounds like its time for some Geritol.

Here a few more things that most of us over a certain age grew up with and how old they are now:

The Day the Earth Stoll Still (the original, not the steaming pile with Keanu) turns 60 this year.

Batman, the TV series, turns 45. You would think that Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox Television (who produced the show) would have ended their petty squabbles and release this by now but I guess neither side needs the money that selling this on DVD or as a download through iTunes, Zune, Amazon, VUDU (Wal-Mart) would rake in.

The Green Hornet TV show I believe also turns 45 this year. This has been digitally restored and aired on TV. If they put it out for sale it might also help push coaster sales for the Seth Rogen movie. About the only notable star was some martial arts guy who played Kato by the name of Bruce Lee. And in a twist of irony, the theme song was "Flight of the Bumblebee" played by Jazz trumpeter Al Hirt.

Since we're fast approaching 30 years of Al, with this CD he is showing no signs of slowing down, which is good for the GRD geeps and those geeks who haven't heard of the show (I know, I know, perish the thought). I downloaded it from iTunes and got the videos they had bundled with it for the price of $13.99 (don't know how long Steve will allow this to continue) and the vids (especially the one for CNR) are still the high quality stuff we expect from him and I would advise not to be drinking when watching so you don't commit alcohol abuse by spewing your drink when you bust out laughing. Until we get "Weird Al"-o-vision or at least a channel dedicated to him on our hi-def sets, make mine GRD

Saw the trailer for Phoenix Rising and the best part was at the end where Books is checking his pocket watch against Big Ben and Braun comes back and looks at him like she wants to give him one upside the head or just shoot him where he stands for wasting time doing that when they are in pursuit of their quarry.

Hi gang. Was surprised at some of the Oscar winners and glad "The Social Network" didn't win because there were ways they could have told a better story and they fumbled it away.

Also have been watching all of the Doctor Who stories that included the Brigadier in honor of the passing recently of Nicholas Courtney, the sctor who played Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, at the age of 81 and am trying to catch up on the Sarah Jane Adventures that had him on as well. Other than the Doctor, he has been considered one of the better non-Companion characters on the show.

In my previous comment about the Audio Drama featuring Tom Baker as the Doctor, you can go to audiogo.co.uk and search for Doctor Who The Hornets Nest and either download or buy a CD of each part. Cost looks to be 7 to 10 pounds (about $15-$20) each. It came out in 2009 but there might still be fans who have not heard of it yet that are fans of the Fourth Doctor and would like to have it for their Library or on their favorite listening device.

Hey gang, enjoyed what was available from the wreckage. Just thought that I would mention to those Whovians that are fans of the Classic series and may not be aware of it that BBC Audio did a six part story line called "The Hornets Nest" which is a full cast Audio Drama starring, for the first time since he left the role, Tom Baker as the Doctor. I know that some people are not fans of audio programming (i.e. Old Time Radio) but for those who are and are Tom Baker fans then this might be something they'll be interested in. You should be able to search bbc.co.uk for further information and it gives people something else to listen to while waiting for the next episode of GRD sWeekly.

Love the talk about Comic Con and can't wait until this fall for some of the favorite shows most of us watch to return-especially Big Bang Theory with Sheldon and his girlfriend. This will get me through until everybody's favorite pet dinosaur, Rex, comes back when Primeval returns next year for its 4th Season. Until then, make mine GRD.

I went back and saw "The War Games" storyline and in episode 10 of the storyline and it reminded me of why the Doctor feels like he does about his people and it reminded me of something else as well-we don't see the regeneration from Patrick Troughton (Doctor 2) to Jon Pertwee (Doctor 3) as the Time Lords banish him to Earth of the 20th century and change his appearance and with a TARDIS that can't go anywhere. Also, someone mentioned an unaired episode from the Tom Baker era. The only storyline from that era that I know of that never aired on TV (including on the BBC) was "Shada" because for some reason they never finished filming it and parts of it were used in "The Five Doctors" after Tom Baker said he would come back to do it and then stiffed everybody at the last minute and for the longest time has had the attitude towards being the Doctor that Leonard Nimoy had in the '70's about being only known as Spock (and I believe that 2010 is the 35th anniversary of his book "I Am Not Spock".) Anyway, love the show and am surprised at being the only one to leave commentary on the Doctor. As a note, I put the Doctor number behind the actor's name in case any new Whovians aren't quite sure so they can go back to see the Classic stories and have a rough idea who was Who at the time.

Here is a small mind bender to think about concerning the number of regenerations left for the Doctor. At the end of the "The War Games" storyline, when the Time Lords basically banished the Doctor to Earth they regenerated him from Patrick Troughton (Doctor 2) to John Pertwee (Doctor 3). Since the other regenerations have occurred due to severe damage to the Doctor and this one was forced upon him, does it count? We find out during Peter Davison's (Doctor 5) run that he basically lives 13 lives because he can regenerate 12 times from his original lifetime and at the time he had 8 more left after regenerating 4 times already. I know that this has been modified since the show has returned to the air but I wonder if part of the current storyline could include problems with the Doctor being able to apparently regenerate an infinite number of times now and the effect it might have on him physically and mentally.

Hi gang, love the topic for this weeks sWeekly. However, there are a couple of things about Doctor Who and every regenerations first encounter with the Daleks-it takes the Daleks a while to figure out that this guy claiming to be the Doctor really is their arch nemesis and must be "exterminated". It happened the first time I remember with Jon Pertwee (Doctor 3) and I think that it has also happened with Peter Davison (Doctor 5) and Colin Baker (Doctor 6). I can't remember if it was the same for Patrick Troughton (Doctor 2) and Sylvester McCoy (Doctor 7). As for Tom Baker (Doctor 4), I wasn't really much of a fan of his (Blasphemy I know the cry will be from a lot of the fans of Doctor 4). Also, we first saw the Black Daleks during Patrick Troughton's run as the Doctor, so the "Mighty Morphin' Power Daleks" aren't really a new idea but maybe they finally had the budget to buy some cans of Krylon paint. It also took the Cybermen a little bit to catch on as well. I would love to see the Whomobile from Jon Pertwee's time make a reappearance again to see what it can do because I think of a vehicle that looks like an early 1900's automobile driven by the Doctor has some features that would be impressive if put to use. Think of it this way, if the TARDIS has an infinite number of rooms in it for different things (how many control rooms have we seen over the years?), then what could we do with the Whomobile as seen by others? Just a thought.

It was unlike anything else I have ever dealt with. I wanted to ask her how important she thought she was to believe everyone in the world was out to get her. She was part of the reason I took a week off from class. I wanted to give her a chance to be in a class without me.

Thanks for dropping by... glad you had a good time.

Flynn, I was looking back at our comments about the infamous lady of the class and I have to say I was cracking up when you started talking about her. I'm sorry she called you a racsist. In one of her posts she made it clear to me that I called her stupid. Again, I apologize you had to go through her crap. I'll let my friends know about this site. Thanks for sharing!

What a great discussion on TV themes. Thank you.

As I was listening, I started thinking about franchises and their themes. I know that Sean Callery wrote an entire theme for 24, but only about 30 seconds makes it into the end credits.

I also thought about the Stargate franchise, and found it interesting that SG-1 and Atlantis had opening themes, but Universe doesn't.

TV themes are certainly a lost art, and I would love to see a return. Thanks for the show!
