Post some Box Office thoughts
The July 14th show had some box office talk that had me thinking.

You guys said: It seems like things like the new Indiana Jones movies would be around for a long time - several weeks at least.

This is referring years back when films like Star Wars would be in the theaters for almost a year. I think there were fewer moves coming out and fewer theaters...it was definitely a different culture back then. I mean that movies would come out and have a slow boil. There wasn't the rush there is today to be a quick hit - in and out of the theaters. I think it's like that because they want to get the movie out on home video asap because they make so much of their money now on DVD.

You guys said: you pointed out the close US box office take between Indy 4 and Iron Man. Internationally speaking, Indy is whomping Iron Man, but it has the benefit of being the 4th installment of a beloved series. People know and love Indiana Jones, so of course it's popular. Iron Man on the other hand came out of nowhere. Most people had no idea who this character was before the movie. Let's see how Indy 4 does compared to Iron Man 4 :)

Interesting points sir. So this begs the question.... How long before everyone's home setups makes the movies redundant? I love going to the movies... or rather I used to. The only reason I still go is otherwise the movie will be spoiled for me while I wait 4 months for the dvd.

The whole theater-going experience has become less and less a thrill for me.

For many, we can see the films at home, on DVD with a decent surround system and not have to put up with the general public who insist on bringing their rowdy kids, talking during the movie, etc. Plus, the simple fact is that it's almost as much to buy the movie first week it comes out and own it as to go see it in a theater. If you don't like it, take it to a used DVD place and get something back on the investment.

I think there are some ways to combat this. Electroshock seats for those who talk.....oh wait.

Movies are trying to be an experience again with IMAX films and the new 3-D stuff.

I'd love to see a theater that had "adults only" time for showings. No kids under 13, no matter what.

Ditto that here as well... it's amazing just how many dumbasses are out there who dare call themselves "adult"

We're getting closer all the time, Mark Cuban already does this with some of the movies he produces, getting simultaneous release in theatres, DVD and HDNet all at once...

I haven't bothered with a "theater" in like 5 years... Though I hit the drive in a couple times each summer... I would much rather wait for movies to hit DVD.

I so wish drive ins would make a comeback. Now they even broadcast on the low fm dial so you can use your car speaker to hear it. That is cool.

Hollywood!!! Let me go ahead and pay ya $20 and I get to watch a brand new flick at my house.. with my popcorn and NO STUPID PEOPLE!

That or show everything at The Byrd

Me and the girlfriend honestly still enjoy going to the movies. Now usually we go on "cheap night" but still for us it is an escape. I mean our DVD collection is not limitless and as I said. It is a way for us to go and enjoy each other's company and just escape for a while.

Indeed. I get so very frustrated at the people trying to show off or hop on a phone during a movie. For crying out loud, I'm trying to watch this!!!

A comeback is never going to happen, but one can hope that there will always be a few places keeping the experience alive. About an hour from me, there's a great drive-in in Indiana that we've been to a few times. It always takes me back...
