 Have YOU gone 4e?
Just a little curious to see how our community is responding to the new 4th Edition of DnD.

 Re: Have YOU gone 4e?
While I am tremendously impressed with the general design, the consistency of the rules, and the way they've managed to express their vision through the system, this is definitely not the system for me. I would have to almost completely overhaul (I think the experts call it "drift") the system in order to be able to use it. The focus on combat is overwhelming, especially in that there are so very few Utility type abilities be it Powers, Features, Skills or Feats. And now more than ever customizing the rules has become a huge undertaking, in that at least 50% of the page count is nothing but descriptions of Powers, all of which would have to be reviewed and changed in a customization.
To me it no longer feels like D&D - it looks much more like a computer game, or a tactical simulation! (I'll know on wednesday if it handles like "real" D&D - but for now it looks like it has just gone too far from the original charm.)
BUT, Like I said in an earlier post: I what you want is a generic fantasy roleplaying game that is an epic-style tactical simulation, you are probably not going to find anything better!! It is going to be very hard to break the system, so Munchkins are going to hate it. Power Gamers with their love of cool powers and abilities are going to adore it.
What D&D offers on the system side you can get just as good in an MMO - the roleplaying is left entirely up to you as players & DM, and does not appear to be supported by the rules. For me a system should evoke a mood - the mood of the setting and the style of storytelling your GM is going for. D&D 4e either does not do this at all, or the mood is so vapid as to be worthless. That is the deal-breaker for me. The system looks nearly perfect (for its purpose) but is just too generic to be enjoyable (even more so than GURPS)

 Re: Have YOU gone 4e?
This is kind of a loaded question for me... I plan on picking up at least the PHB to do some reading and will certainly do a few test runs, but the long term changeover would depend on my group's outlook. My early feelings are positive on some aspects of the system (such as more efficient actions), but I see some red flags as well.
The 4e system really reminds me of the D&D Miniatures game rules in a lot of ways...

Thank god, I thought I was the only one that did that. I have a crap ton of books that I've never used but plan on it...someday. EDIT: I already have my copy of the 4th Edition box set from Amazon and have begun a re-imagining of the cleric I am currently playing. Seems a bit under powered compared to his 3.5 self but then again I'm only up to the 4th level.
