Doris and the Ankh by Brian Holtz

A fantasy adventure for all ages.

Doris, a neurotic and quirky thirteen-year-old, is thrust into an alternate reality where flowers sneeze, fairies can’t be trusted and a beast that isn’t quite a wolf means to kill her. Racing against time, she’ll learn that anything is possible, even the unlikeliest of things… And sometimes a big imagination is all you need.

The Gearheart: Maiden Flight of the Avenger by Alex White

Agent Augustus Elsworth is a Seeker of the Arcane Unknown, mechanic, pilot and thief… or so he believes. When he is caught trying to steal a magic artifact from the ruthless mobster Charles Patrick, he is offered a choice: buy it outright, or forget about his mission. In order to win the money, the young mechanic decides to enter the Cliffside Aeroprix, the most dangerous air race in the world. Can Augustus win the race, or even survive it?

I tried getting into the first Gearheart book, 'cause it was filed under Steampunk - but it seemed to be slightly mislabeled (maybe more diesel-mana-punk?)

The first chapter had magic and a deuce-and-a-half truck which didn't really didn't strike me as particularly steampunky.

Has anyone else given it a listen, and can tell me if it turns the right way again?
