WotC to revise the GSL and the SRD!
Looks like they do listen after all... WotC to Revise D&D 4th Edition GSL and SRD. Very interesting news, we'll have to wait and see what comes out of this. As a side note, there was a post on this in ENWorld (which I can't get to at work since it's blocked now) and the PR folks are saying it's definitely going to be "opener" than the previous version, whatever that might mean.

I don't think it is going to be as great as everyone thinks. They are waiting until AFTER GenCon to release it. I'm SURE they don't want a riot on their hands...after all, the 4e announcement went over SO well.

Well, to be perfectly honest, all they can do is go up, that's how bad the GSL was in its previous incarnation. And I'm not surprised they're waiting til after GenCon, they've probably got all hands working on getting ready for GenCon. It is this weekend after all.

Hmm... I've been kicking around the idea of doing some kind of adaptation of the 4e rules, just to see if it can be done. I should probably not then... until they announce what's allowed.

True..the GSL sucks for every company NOT named Wizards of the Coast. As for the group going to GenCon...I'm PRETTY sure that doesn't include the corporate lawyers. And it's the lawyers who are dictating this license. So still, no excuse for announcing this NOW. All it does is anger people already angry and create a bunch more angry people as they ask for answers at GenCon and get only, "Yeah...we can't talk about that yet."

Oh yeah, the lawyers are certainly the ones putting the license into the proper legalese, but they still need the designers' input on what the GSL needs to include to make it more open for 3PPs. And I can't imagine people getting angrier over a document that now has the potential to actually benefit them. If it takes three months or more for a newly revised GSL, then they have every right to get angry, but I don't see it happening now. Reserve the WotC hate for when they deserve it. This isn't that time, IMO.

I appreciate Scott and Linnae posting at ENWorld, but they aren't helping. They pop up with "we are doing this cool stuff...but we can't talk about it." It would be better if they just didn't over reach themselves. BUT...I don't mean to bag on those guys. I get the feeling they WANT to be more forth coming but "corporate" won't let them. It's much easier for Clark at Necromancer games and Eric Mona at Paizo. Those guys RUN their companies....hells bells...Clark IS the company. So, no hatin.' Just really, really REALLY frustrated and disappointed.

I am glad to see that the revisions are coming. I am in no hurry to go 4E, but was definitely impressed by the 3E and 3.5E stuff from companies besides WotC.
Atlas Games definitely comes to mind. Fantasy Flight and Green Ronin as well.
